Syros is 83 nautical miles from the Port of Piraeus and some 100 years ago Ermoupolis used to be the main Port of Greece. It is the central Cyclades Island and therefore provides an excellent base for visiting other islands.
The island nowadays has a winter population of around 30,000 of which around 18,000 are in Ermoupolis which has a vast number of shops, cafes, bars and places to eat out. The night life in Ermoupolis can be very lively to the small hours if this is what you are looking for.
The island has many beautiful beaches that are ideal for swimming at Delphini, Kini, Galissas, Finikas, Posidonia, Agathopes, Komito, Ambella, Mega Gialos, Vari, Santorinos, & Azolimnos. These relatively small villages have a variety of tavernas and some have bars, supermarkets and tourist shops.
If you go to the north of the island you will arrive first at Ano Syros and this is well worth a visit with its museum, narrow little streets and countless steps! From here northwards you will encounter a rugged mountainess area full of natural beauty. Look for the Ouzeris & Tavernas. The beaches at the north west of Syros are a little difficult to reach but worth finding if you enjoy walking. Alternatively during the summer months a day trip can be taken by boat from Kini.
